 CHALLENGING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PROJECT
The Challenging Violence Against Women Project is the only project of its kind in Scotland.
We are a team of men working in partnership with men to tackle issues of gender inequality. We do this by:

Promoting Gender Equality and Human Rights

Raising Awareness of Honour Based Violence (HBV), Gender Based Violence (GBV) & Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Reducing the incidence of all types of Violence against Women

Why Men?

We work with men to support them to change their attitudes and practices and influence others in their communities. Social change affects the entire community. It is important that men are involved in this process to come up with lasting solutions. Ensuring that everyone has basic knowledge of their rights and responsibilities helps us achieve our aim of enabling women to lead a dignified life free from violation of human rights.
The Men's Group at Maryhill Integration Network made this short film to discuss violence against women, and what we can do collectively and as individuals to end gender based violence. They film ties into the international campaign - The White Ribbon Campaign - and more information about that can be found here.

How We Achieve Our Aims
  • Building our relationships with established community groups and religious organisations
  • Educating communities about the harmful health and social effects of FGM, GVB & HBV
  • Engaging individuals through providing support and sign posting
  • Raising awareness of the implications of human rights violations, with a focus on child protection and violence against women
  • Recruiting Community Champions to raise awareness and address attitudes surrounding violence against women within their communities and families.

Measuring the impact of our work - Evaluation study 2021

The Challenging Violence Against Women project was part-funded by the National Lottery Community Fund between 2018 - 2021. As part of the review of the project, in 2021 we commission an external evaluation by Ruthless Research www.ruthlessresearch.co.uk - the report of this evaluation is available below. This evaluation shows the significant impact our work and approach of working with men through men has on changing the attitudes of men and in reducing support for FGM and other forms of gender based violence.

Survivors Of Torture Football Initiative

We are really excited to announce a project we have been working on, along side Freedom from Torture, The Jimmy Johnstone's Charitable Trust and The Scottish Football Association.
Many people we work with are torture and trauma survivors, and we have long worked on incorporating torture survivor awareness training into the public sector.
The project will work with refugee and asylum seeking men who are survivors of torture and trauma, with the aim of starting a football team! This is the first project of its kind in Scotland, and we hope it will create a community of men who feel supported, included and active!

Female Genital Mutilation Seminar
The Challenging VAW project organised a fantastic joint event with Saheliya, and invited public and third sector representatives to discuss FGM and raise awareness of the practice.
A big part of the work Challenging VAW does is in relation to tackling FGM practice. Currently there are roughly 5000 new case of FGM recorded in the UK each year, even though the practice has been illegal since 1985.

You can find more about our work on FGM here
